This question is always difficult to answer, but it's one I enjoy. (I love philosophy!) I believe to some degree that there things for certain that are destined/fated to happen. Yes luck, or having no luck are needed but at the same time I believe certain individuals you found for a reason (whether good or bad) , and that certain scenarios happen as well for the purpose to 1) shape you or 2) make you better. Though this can easily be argued when it's someone negative but one can argue they're fated to be negative.

Other things though I believe are entirely your choice.

I think it would have to be a bit of both. Supposedly we have free will (not going by a religion viewpoint but in general) but also fate exists. Otherwise why would we even know or ponder about fate if it didn't? So I think both do exist with one another. I think in a planet with duality it would have to.
